Brookings, S.D. (04/28/2016) – The Swiftel Center Dairy Fest committee awarded two $500 scholarships to South Dakota State University students at the 2016 SDSU Dairy Science Scholarship Banquet. Audrey Souza and Angela Wick were selected as scholarship recipients.
Scholarship funds came from 2015 Dairy Fest sponsorships. Dairy Fest is an annual event put on by dairy producers, processors and industry leaders to bring the community together to celebrate the dairy industry. The festival was created with the mission to provide a free, family-friendly festival to help educate consumers about the dairy industry and the future of dairy youth education.
Audrey Souza is a Dairy Production, and Ag Education, Communications and Leadership and Pre-Vet Major anticipating graduation May 2017. Audrey is from Milbank, SD and is very active in promotion of the dairy industry and the SDSU Dairy Club for which she has been Activities Coordinator. Audrey is a leader in numerous activities such as 4-H, FFA, State-A-Thon, Junior Holstein Association, SDSU dairy cattle judging and many others.
Angela Wick is a Dairy Production Major anticipating graduation May 2018. Angela is from Jordan, MN and is active in the SDSU Dairy Club, currently serving as a co-chair for the 2016 Dairy Camp that will bring to campus almost 40 K-12 children to campus to learn about the dairy industry. She is very active in her family dairy farm as well as Little International Club, Lead State, and SDSU Meet State.
The SDSU Dairy Science Department Scholarship Banquet was held on April 14 with 275 people in attendance including students and their families, alumni, producers, processors, supporting industry personnel, faculty and their families, university administration, South Dakota Department of Agriculture personnel, and friends. More than 100 scholarships and awards were presented totaling $123,539 to undergraduate and graduate Dairy Science students. Details can be found at www.sdstate.edu/ds/students/index.cfm
The 2016 Dairy Fest Carnival will take place June 4 at the Swiftel Center, Brookings, SD from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is free to the public. Stop by for several hands-on family friendly activities including a live animal petting of cows/calves, farmer relays, combine bouncy house, milk dunk tank, corn box, straw bale maze, five-gallon pail stack, corn hole toss, bobbing for cheese sticks, cow chip putting and cow milking. There will also be a HyVee dairy foods demonstration along with the opportunity to get your picture taken with the South Dakota Dairy Princess.
