More than 790 yard waste carts were assembled by a small team in the Swiftel Center arena
Brookings, S.D. (4/22/2020) – The Swiftel Center arena was full, but instead of people, it was full of carts. A small team of Swiftel Center employees assisted the City of Brookings Landfill by assembling 793 of the new Brookings yard waste carts.
“We are more than willing to help other City Departments in any way we can, especially in these uncertain times,” said Tom Richter, Swiftel Center Executive Director. “Our Swiftel Center arena floor is available. It was a convenient place to take delivery of the carts and to assemble and store them until they are delivered to Brookings residents.”
A semi full of cart materials was driven directly into the Swiftel Center arena where a small team unloaded the materials. The team worked together while maintaining proper social distancing to assemble the yard waste carts.
“It feels great to help other city departments during this pandemic,” said Andrea Hogie, Swiftel Center Director of Finance. “It’s like we are all one big family getting through this together.”
Providing a gathering place for the Brookings community is an important component of the Swiftel Center mission. The arena space is typically full of guests and attendees participating in entertaining and educational events. Recognizing the space availability, the Swiftel Center team connected with the City of Brookings Landfill to make the arena space available as a gathering place for yard waste cart assembly.
"With everything that’s going on, it feels great to help out in any way that we can," said Jake Melius, Swiftel Center Operations Supervisor.
In February, the Brookings City Council voted to purchase yard waste carts to replace the paper waste bags. Carts have begun to be delivered to residents throughout Brookings who have requested a cart.
How to Request A Cart
To request a yard waste cart, contact the Brookings City Landfill at 605-693-3667. For Brookings residents, there is no additional cost to add a yard waste cart as it is included in curbside service. An optional additional cart can be added for a fee of $4 which will be added to a resident’s monthly utility bill. For more information, visit www.cityofbrookings.org
