Brookings, S.D. (04/30/2018) – The Swiftel Center Dairy Fest committee awarded two $500 scholarships to South Dakota State University students at the 2018 SDSU Dairy and Food Science Scholarship Banquet. Rhea Lawrence and Chelsea Schossow were selected as scholarship recipients.
Scholarship funds came from 2017 Dairy Fest sponsorships. Dairy Fest is an annual event put on by dairy producers, processors and industry leaders to bring the community together to celebrate the dairy industry. The festival was created with the mission to provide a free, family-friendly festival to help educate consumers about the dairy industry and the future of dairy youth education.
Rhea Lawrence is working towards her Ph.D. in Dairy Production under the guidance of Dr. Jill Anderson. Lawrence is preparing to graduate in May 2019. She is active in promoting the dairy industry through many programs including assisting at Dairy Fest each year.
Chelsea Schossow is working towards her M.S. degree in Dairy Production under the guidance of Dr. Jill Anderson. She completed her B.S. in Dairy Production at South Dakota State University in 2017. Schossow is a strong promoter of the dairy industry through numerous activities including the annual Dairy Fest as well as being a 2014 finalist in the Minnesota Princess Kay program.
The 2018 SDSU Dairy and Food Science Scholarship Banquetwas held on April 9 with 306 people in attendance including students and their families, alumni, producers, processors, supporting industry personnel, faculty and their families, university administration, South Dakota Department of Agriculture personnel, and friends. Of the 30 incoming students for fall 2018, six students and their families were present. More than 115 scholarships and awards were presented totaling $153,000 to undergraduate and graduate students in Dairy and Food Sciences.
